Can I sleep in my dentures?

Dentures should typically be taken out at night.

Typically, dentures should be taken out every day for a period of time where air can hit the gums and keep them stimulated. Taking your dentures out lets your gums breathe and they are able to relax. This also may help prevent shrinkage of the gums.

Some patients may experience airway closures when they take their dentures out which can result in sleep apnea. For those patients it is better for their dentures to be left in at night. Patients who also have issues with their TMJ (jaw joint) may want to keep their dentures in at night to maintain the jaw.

It should be noted that if you do leave your dentures in at night your dentures may wear faster.

when do I reline my dentures?

Relining should be scheduled every 1-2.5 years after the dentures are inserted.

Relines are expected maintenance that are required for a denture to ensure function and comfort.

Relining is necessary due to the inevitable bone loss that occurs when natural teeth are extracted. This procedure will improve the fit and stability of the denture.

How long do dentures last?

Typically 5-7 years.

For some patients they may need new ones much sooner, it all depends on how fast and hard you wear out your teeth.

Regular maintenance is important for your denture treatment.

Dentures could be comparable to cars, they need maintenance. Whether it be your bite, adjustments, relines, or getting new dentures made. With time things change and so do you dentures. Regular maintenance is important to keep them functioning properly.

How often do I come in for maintenance?

Cleaning them daily and with a denture cleaner & denture brush.

We recommend that patients clean their dentures daily. Soak them in denture cleaner or the Renew (denture cleaner) we provide here at the clinic (follow the instructions on the bottle). Use a denture brush or a soft tooth brush to brush the dentures. Do not use toothpaste, this will scratch the plastic.

How do I clean my dentures?

Don’t fix it at home or use superglue. Please bring it in for a professional repair.

We don’t advise patients to try to fix their dentures at home or use superglue (as superglue may contain toxic chemicals and irritate your gums/skin). Seeing a professional that can fix it is the best thing one can do if they’ve broken their dentures!

My dentures broke! What do I do?

No.

Toothpaste will scratch your dentures and make them look dull. Scratches can harbor bacteria growth. Remember to also use a denture brush or a soft toothbrush.

Why do my new dentures feel different than my old ones?

Every set of dentures that are made will feel different.

Our mouths are ever-changing, as patients continue in their denture journeys they will notice that their gums are shrinking and that their teeth may shift.

Two denture sets can never be the same, whether it be because of your denturist or the condition of your mouth.

Dentures are made to what is presented in the mouth, they may feel different and that is to be expected as nothing can stay the same forever.
